Alaska is a USA state that is bounded by Canada on the East, while its coastline is covered by both the Arctic and the Pacific Ocean. Alaska was under Russian rule until 1867. In that year, Czar Alexander II ceded Russia’s control over Alaska to the U.S. in exchange for 7.2 million dollars. It was officially proclaimed a state on January 3, 1959.
Its exploration had started in 1741, while the area was a heaven for hunters dealing in fur trade. Towards the end of the 19th century there was also a great influx of prospective gold miners. 1968 saw the discovery of oil in the region, which is the biggest state area-wise, but only the 47th in population.
